In a leap of faith, we have entered a new decade with the promise of betterment. The new decade brings a sense of hope and optimism, in an era of rapid change. And as we see the world transform, faster than we can comprehend at times, it’s clear why Pantone has selected Classic Blue as its Colour of the Year for 2020.
There is a lot going on in the year 2020 and it can be overwhelming at times. So it’s only natural we seek out our comforts, people, places or possessions that reassure us, or that we can depend on. This year’s Classic Blue captures these elements of faith and trust, as a colour that is timeless and enduring, that highlights our desire for a dependable and stable foundation to build on as we progress through a new era.
We have seen various shades of blue have their time in the Pantone Colour of the Year spotlight, and its resurgence reflects our desire to return to it, particularly in a time where we’re living with a lot of uncertainty, where some days we don’t feel quite so secure. As Executive Director of the Pantone Colour Institute puts it “Blue, from an emotional, psychological standpoint, has always represented a certain amount of calm and dependability. It’s a colour that you can rely on.”
During Pantone’s annual global research effort, it was evident that Classic Blue was a popular choice. It appeared in a diverse range of fields from the Arts to the Beauty Industry as well as being seen in Automotive Manufacturing, Tech and even outer space.
In a bid to capture the full essence of Classic Blue upon its 2020 reveal, Pantone collaborated with several partners across the industry to develop a multi-sensory experience of the colour, moving beyond just sight. Showcasing in Manhattan earlier this year, guests were greeted with an interpretation of a Classic Blue fragrance, a scent described as “where the sky meets sea”, noting tones of musk and sea salt. Classic Blue coloured interiors decorated the floor and Classic Blue berry flavoured jelly was served. To complete the entire sensory experience a three-minute audio track titled ‘Vivid Nostalgia’ set the tone for the room, playing ethereal, ambient, underwater sounds.
With the new decade in full swing, we find ourselves at the start of a new era, searching for reassurance and confidence in a sometimes-uncertain world. So, it is with understanding that we welcome Pantone’s Classic Blue as the colour of 2020, and let it be a visual cue to remind us to remain true, dependable and forever timeless.
